Lemon balm | Melissa Oil

The official name of lemon balm oil is Melissa officinalis but it is known by many other names including bee balm, cure-all, lemon balm and sweet balm etc. Lemon balm plant is basically a mint plant which is found abundantly in the Mediterranean region.  This is a perennial plant which mainly grows in bushes. The leaves of lemon balm plant are cut 2-3 times in a season.  The oil derived from lemon balm is usually light in color and has gone a strong scent of lemon. This oil is also rich in rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid.

Lemon balm is being grown abundantly throughout the world. The leaves, stems and sometimes the flowers of lemon balm are used for extracting the lemon balm oil. This oil is being used since 1600’s and is considered as a medical cure for many health problems.  Lemon balm oil consists of plyphenols and tannins and these components are antiviral as well as antibacterial. This oil is effective in treating mumps, herpes and strep etc. A lot of ointments and creams consist of lemon balm oil and are helpful in healing genital ores and cold sores. Also, lemon balm oil does not cause any side effects like irregular menstruation, nausea, vomiting etc.
